For medium-sized game birds like grouse, partridge, quail, and snipe, use shotgun pellets with a number seven shot.
Veterans often refer to bullets with a caliber between 7 and 7.5 as “dove shots,” so named because of their effectiveness against animals roughly the size of a large dove. Although steel shot is less effective than lead shot in most situations, it does allow you to hunt in areas where the use of lead is prohibited.
Steel shot is one “non-toxic” type of ammunition that is relatively inexpensive. The needs of hunters, clay shooters, and target shooters should all be met by this ammunition.
#7 shot is usually used in modern shotguns like the 12 and 20 gauges made by RIO, Fiocchi, and Winchester.
Hunting Use
When hunting medium- to small-sized birds like pheasant and dove, one of the most common sizes to use is a #7 because it provides excellent range without causing excessive damage to the meat. When you finally get a good shot on a bird, all you have left is the beak and the feathers, and that’s just frustrating.
Shots at grouse, partridge, and quail are effective as well; however, given that steel shot is being used, it’s best to keep your distance between 25 and 35 yards. You shouldn’t assume anything about the lack of padding on these birds.
Some people are worried about how lead shot affects the environment, so some states and cities have banned it and made shooters switch to steel loads.
Although this is an ongoing source of contention, the fact remains that no public hunting lands permit the use of lead shot. It’s important to remember that ricochets can be a problem in some hunting situations, so be cautious if you plan on using steel.
